Lot Essay

Sold with a photo-certificate from Professor Dr. Jürgen Imiela, dated Mainz, den 15. August 2000.

Lovis Corinth first came to the Walchensee in 1918. Situated at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, south of Munich, Corinth and his wife were fascinated by the vivid landscapeof Walchensee and decided to find a house there. It was in the autumn of 1919 that the Walchensee area became an important motive in his work. The present watercolour was probably executed in late December. This watercolour shows the view from the upper floor of Corinth's house. Similar views are also depicted in oil versions; such as Walchensee, Blick auf Wetterstein of 1921 now in the Saarlandmuseum, Saarbrücken, and Walchensee mit Bergkette und Uferhang of 1925 which is now in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich.

We are grateful to Professor Dr. Jürgen Imiela for his kind assistance in cataloguing this work.
