Lot Essay

De Groër (op. cit., p. 119), following Sterling (loc. cit.) describes this picture as an autograph replica of de Lyon's prototype in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow. De Groër lists a further three versions, although these depict the sitter facing the opposite way to this picture. The present panel is closest to the Pushkin prototype, although the latter shows the sitter bust-length, and without the small dog here included by the artist.
