Lot Essay

The artist, probably a pupil of Salomon van Ruysdael, is best known for his Haarlem landscapes close in style to Roelof van Vries and Salomon Rombouts. Far less commonly, he produced pictures of weaver's workshops as exemplified by the present picture and the picture formerly in the art market, Berlin (see W. Bernt, The Netherlandish Painters of the 17th Century, Munich, 1969, I, p.299).
