Lot Essay

Cornelis Springer painted town views in which architectural features taken from reality, doorways, church walls, town squares and rows of houses, were reassembled to create imaginery scenes. The romantic atmosphere he evoked was achieved through the mastery of the play of light and shade on a summer's day, complemented typically with images of townfolk going about their daily chores.
