cover 1857 (19 Nov.) envelope from Cardiff addressed "John Petherick Esq., Chartoom, Central Africa, to the care of Alfred S. Walne Esq., H.B.M. Consul, Cairo, Egypt", bearing 1855-57 6d. tied by very fine "CARDIFF" sideways duplex cancellation, fine and rare. From Cairo the cover was carried in a Consular Bag up the Nile where it was navigable and by camel through the desert to Khartoum. Thought to be the earliest known incoming mail to Khartoum. Photo
