Cullen is described in GM as "the most conspicuous figure in the history of the Edinburgh Medical School during the 18th century." His Lectures on the Materia Medica were expanded to form A Treatise of the Materia Medica (Edinburgh, 1789, 2 volumes) [cf. GM 1838].
