Lot Essay

Currently celebrating its centenary year, The Fire Bird was Stravinsky's 'breakthrough' piece and the first of his collaborations with Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes. Dancing the title role was the celebrated Russian ballerina Tamara Karsavina.
The ballet premiered in Paris on 25 June 1910 to huge critical and public aclaim, and these sketches must have been taken from Laura Knight during or after one of the original run of performances.
