Lot Essay

The depiction of the waterfront at Rhyl was a constant source of inspiration to Cox. He produced several sketches and watercolours of the scene which he exhibited from 1843, and his expansive oil, now in Birmingham, was probably conceived after a visit to Rhyl in August 1854.
A very similair composition is illustrated in David Cox, 1783-1859, A Bi-centenary Exhibition, Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1983, no. 100.
