" the elaborate gates, emblems of land ownership and the way the landscape is framed by our perceptions of it, are only inches away from clanging shut, forever we feel. The remoteness of the landscape, our sense of being debarred from entering it, is heightened by the aerial perspective and the ambiguous location of the gate: an unspecified spatial plane appears to exist between the gate and the land, as if, already, we can view the landscape in our imaginations only. The aerial perspective and landscape forms are loosely modelled on the landscape backdrop in Piero della Francesca's Diptych of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino(1465). Keeling is again referring to an image of ownership and control of the land. " V Hammond, Spread - David Keeling, Niagara Galleries exh.cat., Melbourne, 1994, unpaginated.
