Lot Essay

The sitter was the son of Colonel Campbell of Glensaddell by Mary Campbell, second daughter of John Campbell of Barbreck. He entered the East India Company in 1752 and moved to India the following year. He was to remain in the Company's service until 1771 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1754, Captain in 1758, Major in 1763 and Colonel in 1765. He married Anne, daughter of John Campbell of Barbreck, at Fort St. George, Madras, in July 1762, by whom he had three sons and five daughters. He died in June 1784 at Saddell Castle, Argyllshire, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Captain Donald Campbell (for whom see lot 51). Dated 1785, this portrait was probably completed after the sitter's death.
