2° (286 x 190mm). Additional engraved title, 6 double-page engraved plates, woodcut device on title-page, woodcut initials. (Plates lightly browned.) Contemporary vellum (lightly soiled, remains of green silk ties). Provenance: unidentified 19th-century engraved armorial bookplate -- S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).

This scarce work, both written and illustrated by De Hooghe, uses allegory to depict the horrific aftermath of the 1672 invasion of the Dutch Republic by Louis XIV. 'In the allegorical representations of the year 1674 his style is completely developed; the figures here appear already fully three-dimensional. He is already very expressive, a master of physiognomy' (Thieme-Becker). Landwehr de Hooghe 38.
