DESCARTES, René (1596-1650). La geometrie. Paris: Charles Angot, 1664. 4° (207 x 158mm). Woodcut device on title, numerous woodcut diagrams in the text, with the 2 final leaves of privilege. Early 19th-century sheep-backed boards (corners a little worn). Provenance: A religious house at Sens (contemporary ownership inscription at head of title) -- David P. Wheatland (book-label).
THE RARE FIRST SEPARATE EDITION of Descarte's Geometrie, first published as part of the appendix of the Discours de la méthode (Leiden, 1637). 'His application of modern algebraic arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which is the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science', PMM 129 (note).
