8o (222 x 140 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title and 38 plates after Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] (some occasional pale browning at edges, some occasional pale spotting). Original green cloth, blindstamped on covers and spine, gilt-lettered on spine (hinges partly cracked, spine slightly darkened with a little wear at ends, a few pale stains, corners lightly bumped); green quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Eleanor Trotter (inscription dated 11 September 1859 on front free endpaper); Centenary Testimonial label; Kenyon Starling (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, in the primary binding. Following the publication of the novel in parts from May 1849 to November 1850, it was published in book form on November 14, 1850. Unsophisticated copies in cloth are VERY SCARCE. Eckel, p.77; Sadleir 686; Smith I:9.
