Always elegant and beautifully restrained, Diet Sayler's work masterfully combines thought and sensuality with rational sensibilities. Throughout his distinguished career, Romanian- born Sayler has maintained that his art is 'free from political rules, religious canons, but also without artistic ideology', and is above all 'the affirmation of subjectivity' ( D. Sayler, quoted in Diet Sayler - Painting does not lie, Messina 2009, p. 57). Using a rational, geometric framework, Sayler's eloquent artworks harness the formal strength and precision of bold colour and simple abstract structures - triangles, right angles, straight lines, recognising their expressive potential. Always highly individual, yet rooted in Russian Suprematism, geometric abstraction and Concrete Art, Sayler employs the fundamental units of artistic expression, using these as a starting point for an infinite number of combinations. Like a composer, Sayler uses pre-established forms to create something with deep emotional and aesthetic resonance. Although welcoming the reduction of the means of expression promoted by proponents of Concrete Art, Sayler breathes life into their conceptual dictates by allowing a substantial element of chance and of personal feeling to infiltrate his work, and by employing a sumptuous colour palette that evoke Renaissance frescoes. Balancing fantasy with formula, it is intuition that guides Sayler's paintings, creating the rhythmic purity that is able to open flat, two dimensional surface into broad and lyrical space that conveys unfettered freedom and unlimited potential.
