DODWELL, Edward (1767-1832). Views in Greece from Drawings. London: Rodwell and Martin, [1819]-1821.

2o (535 x 365 mm). Title with aquatint vignette, 30 hand-colored aquatint plates by R. Havell, T. Fielding, F.C. Lewis and others after Dodwell and Pomardi, mounted on guards. Text in English and French on recto and verso of each leaf. Interleaved with blanks to prevent offsetting. (Some light browning, staining and offsetting, a few leaves reinforced at margins with tissue paper, a few plates slightly shorter.) Contemporary half morocco (rebacked, rubbed); leather backed cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION, ordinary format on thick paper. These magnificent plates were issued in six parts between 1819 and 1821, although the work was originally intended to consist of 60 plates, in twelve parts. A second edition followed in 1830 with an extra plate as frontispiece. The plate list gives page references to Dodwell's Classical and Topographical Tour through Greece during the years 1801, 1805, and 1806, published in 1819 in 2 quarto volumes, and these plates can be regarded as "enlargements" of the 60 plates in that work. They were chosen from hundreds of drawings made by Dodwell and his fellow artist, Pomardi, during their travels in Greece and the islands. In most cases, the engravers are credited with the coloring of the plates, Abbey noting that "the plates which are engraved and coloured by Havell are outstanding." Abbey Travel 130; Blackmer 493; Brunet II:788; Colas 876; Tooley 182.
