Lot Essay

A study for Canuti's altarpiece in the church of Santa Cristina, Bologna (S. Stagni, Domenico Maria Canuti, Rimini, 1988, no. 42, pl. XXXIX). The picture was commissioned by a nun of the Vizzani family, probably in the early 1680s. Malvasia described the picture as 'la spiritosamente istoriata S. Cristina, afferrata per gli capegli dal Padre, con terrore e Pietà degli astanti è del ferace Canuti' (C.C. Malvasia, Felsina Pittrice, Bologna, 1686, p. 267).
