DRESSER, Henry Eeles (1838-1915). A History of the Birds of Europe. London: Taylor and Francis for the author, 1871-1881. 8 volumes (lacking the supplement), 4° (319 x 245mm). 631 (of 633) lithographic plates, all but two hand-coloured, and one unlisted plate, after J.G. Keulemans, Joseph Wolf and E. Neale, the colouring by Smith and W. Hart. Preface to vols. I-V and four further subscribers' lists bound at end of vol. I with original wrapper to parts 59 and 60. (Some persistent spotting to plates and text, some corners creased.) 20th-century green half morocco, spines gilt, original front wrapper to each vol. bound in, top edge gilt (light scuff marks). Provenance: William Henry Smith (1825-1891, bookplate; subscriber).
FINELY-BOUND SUBSCRIBER'S COPY. The unlisted plate (599a) is a second plate showing Larus Minutus (Little Gull) in vol. VIII; the omission seems accidental since it is referred to in the text. The two missing plates are Cyanopica Cooki (pl. 259, also lacking in Zimmer's set) in vol. IV and Lagopus Albus aest (pl. 483) in vol. VII. Anker 120; Fine Bird Books p.72; Nissen IVB 267; Zimmer p.177. (8)
