Signed "Edmund Dulac" (lower right).
Watercolor, pencil, and ink on paper (sheet lightly toned, two corners chipped just touching image, some minor glue residue at extreme edges); matted and framed.

The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayym was originally composed by a mid-11th Century Iranian astronomer, mathematician and poet--Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim Al-Khayyami. Edward Fitzgerald's Victorian-era adaptation of the original work was based upon his own translation of a Persian manuscript held by the Bodleian Library. It enjoyed a huge popularity during the Victorian era and went through numerous illustrated editions. The first edition illustrated by Dulac was published in 1909 and contained 20 mounted color plates. It stands among his most successful illustrated books. This original drawing was used in to illustrate the 20th Quatrain, which reads:
The Palace that to Heav'n his pillars threw,
And Kings the forehead on his threshold drew -
I saw the solitary Ringdove there,
And 'Coo, coo, coo,' she cried; and 'Coo, coo, coo.'
