Lot Essay

In the early 1930s Grant drew nude male and female models in charcoal and pastel in a burst of renewed attention to the figure. Such studies culminated in his big, figurative mural decorations for the RMS Queen Mary liner. This male model is probably Tony Asserati who (without the guitar) is seen in a similar standing pose in a painting now in the studio at Charleston.
