The present work is a finished study that Eastman Johnson completed for a larger work that is currently in the collection of the Union League Club, New York, presumably inspired by the Civil War battle of Antietam.

This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work being compiled by Dr. Patricia Hills.
