Lot Essay

Edgard Maxence was a pupil of Gustave Moreau. He is best known for his symbolist subjects in soft palettes, which evoke serenely calm scenes. In the present work, he has used a similar palette, bringing an attractive exuberance to this arrangement of flowers.

He exhibited his work regularly at the Paris Salon and the Salon de la Rose-Croix. He won a gold medal in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle and was promoted from a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur to Officier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1924.
