EDMONDES, Clement (1566/7-1622). Observations upon Caesars Commentaries setting forth the Practise of ye Art Militarie in the time of the Romaine Empire for the better direction of our Moderne Warrs. London: William Ponsonby, 1604.
2° (280 x 187mm). Woodcut frontispiece portrait of Caesar, engraved title-page and 6 engraved plates, of which 4 are double-page or folding. With blank leaves r4 and t2, E1.4 and 2.3 reversed in binding. (Light dampstain, mostly marginal, paperflaw in one leaf.) Strictly contemporary London binding, sides panelled with gilt and blind fillets, cornerpieces and central lozenge of strapwork and stipple-ground design, initials "H G" flanking centerpiece, fleur-de-lis at corners, gilt spine with red leather label, 2 silk fore-edge ties, watermark on endpapers a jug with initials ADB (a little light rubbing, somewhat heavier at spine, small wormtrack at edge of lower cover, one tie partly missing). Provenance: H.G. (binding) -- Francis Ferrand Foljambe (stamp).
FINELY BOUND COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, augmented with commentary on books 6-7 of the Gallic Wars. Edmondes wrote his study of Caesar's commentaries as a practical manual on contemporary warfare. In addition to discussing Roman tactics, he deals with modern concerns such as an invasion of England, fortification of the Kent coast, etc. Sir Francis Vere, the dedicatee of the 1600 edition books 1-5, drew upon Edmondes' advice in the battle of Niewpoort that year, and the present 1604 edition, dedicated to Henry, Prince of Wales, contains references to contemporary battles and sieges. As STC notes, the publication of the work is complicated. The present copy agrees with STC 7490.
