Lot Essay

Edouard Sain studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris whilst at the studio of Picot. He helped Picot to paint the copy of the official portrait of the Emperor from 1861-1863. He travelled to Italy and Pompeii with Henner and Leroux. Showing work at the Salon on these themes, he returned to Italy regularly, painting Rome, Naples and Capri extensively.
