The present drawing can be dated to circa 1795, when scaffolding was erected on one of the western towers of the cathedral. Dayes executed a number of views of Durham Cathedral from across the River Wear, some from a spot much closer to Prebend's Bridge, one now in the collection of the Rhode Island School of Design. Another version of the present watercolour was sold in these Rooms, 10 July 1984, lot 202.
