Lot Essay

Born in Edinburgh, Hargitt studied under Horatio McCulloch at the Trustees' Academy, subsequently moving to London. In the 1850s he fell under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and his pictures of Scottish views are executed with great attention to detail.
