Lot Essay

The Palace Pier, Brighton was a favourite subject of Le Bas. The present work illustrates Le Bas' fondness for subjects exhibiting interesting arrangements of shape and colour, but the depiction of movement and human character is uncommon for his genre work. A similar work of the same subject was sold in Christie's, South Kensington, 7 December 2006, Lot 115 for £10,800.
