2° (455 x 275mm). 100 hand-coloured engraved plates, most drawn and engraved by Edwards, some engraved by J. Fougeron and W. Darling. (Slight offsetting and soiling, short tears in margins of plates 25 and 54 just affecting plate area, a few short tears to text leaves, final index leaf backed.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt (joints slightly split, spine chipped at head and foot, corners bumped, later endpapers). Provenance: The Hon. the Earl of Fife (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION OF 'A FINE WORK WITH MANY BEAUTIFUL PLATES' (Dunthorne). John Edwards became 'one of the most notable English botanical artists of the eighteenth century... From 1763 until 1812 he exhibited his work in many London exhibitions, including those held by the Society of Artists, and the Royal Academy...
