Meifrén returned to the iconic subject of Cadaqués many times and on each occasion managed to evoke new sensations by capturing the ever changing green and grey tones of the sea and sky. The artist's technical challenge in this painting is to capture not only a moment of time in Cadaqués but to seize an instant in the changing natural world throughout the day.
The chromatic richness of the present work makes it one of the most elaborate and complex renditions of this motif. The fishermen in the foreground on a green shore, the reflection of the village in the calm water, the whitewashed walls and ochre roofs of the village, which echo the shapes of the mountains under a cloudy sky - all combine to create a layered composition of great depth, in which the artist has varied his brushstrokes according to the sensation he wishes to convey. The whole composition is unified by a powerful ambient light, which draws the viewer into an idyllic fragment of the Gerona coast.
