Lot Essay

Depicting the river in the village of Hacking, now part of Hietzing, the 13th "Bezirk" or borough of Vienna, this painting is very similar to a similar composition, Hackinger Au (Fuchs, op. cit., no. 330). It is almost certainly no. 331 in Fuchs' catalogue raisonné, which is identified only from the catalogue references of the 1880-81 Vienna Permanenten Kunstaustellung; these correspond to numbers on the stretcher of the present work.
