Lot Essay

Émile Guillemin was one of the most prolific and successful sculptors of the French Orientalist school. This charming bronze of a young falconer returning from the hunt is a fine example of how Guillemin adopted the use of polychrome decoration to enhance the ethnographic accuracy of the costumes and physiognomy of his subjects.

For a note on Guillemin and further examples of his polychrome Orientalist sculpture please see lot 84.
