Lot Essay

The sitter of the portrait is thought possibly to be Chief Watanabe, one of the Indians allegedly brought over to England by Buffalo Bill to perform in his much acclaimed Wild West Show, which in 1887, the year the picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy, was a feature attraction at The Golden Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria.
