Lot Essay

Margareta Midleton, daughter of Thomas Midleton of York, fervently embraced the Catholic faith and was often imprisioned on account of her zeal and constancy. On 10 March 1585 she was indicted with having heard mass and having harboured Jesuit and seminary priests, when she refused to plead or reject her faith, Judge Cinch ordered her execution. Her terrible punishment was carried out on 25 March 1586 in the Tolbooth.
