Lot Essay

This charming portrait miniature depicting Princess Mary, aged 4 years, dressed as "Britannia", would seem to be a gift presented to H.M. Queen Mary (1867-1953), when Duchess of Cornwall and York. The engraved 'H.B.' could refer to Hélène Bricke -- then the young Princess' German Governess. The engraved date of '91' to the reverse would appear to be an error as Princess Mary was born in 1897 and Queen Mary was not yet Duchess of Cornwall and York -- titles she gained upon the occasion of her marriage in 1893.
