Lot Essay

Dudley North (1707-1764) who lived at Glemham Hall, Suffolk, was the son of Dudley North (1684-1729); who was Member of Parliament for Suffolk, and later in 1722 for the borough of Oxford, and his wife Catherine, daughter of Elihu Yale, founder of Yale University. His great-grandfather was Dudley, 4th Baron North, K.B., and his great uncle Francis was created 1st Baron Guildford. The sitter married Barbara, daughter of Thomas Herbert, Earl of Pembroke.
