Lot Essay

Lady Caroline Ancram, was the only daughter of Robert, 3rd Earl of Holdernesse, and the great-grandaughter of Frederick Duke of Schomberg. She married William Henry, Earl of Ancram (1710-1775), a distinguished officer, in 1735. Her husband, who succeeded his father as 4th Marquess of Lothian in 1767, took part in the battle of Fontenoy in 1745 and commanded the left wing of the Royal army at the Battle of Culloden in the same year, subsequently accompanying the Duke of Cumberland to the continent. Another full-length portrait of the sitter, attributed to William Hoare of Bath, is in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.
