These maternity dolls are worn on the belly or on the back, by women that are threaten to be sterility. Carved by blacksmiths, these effigies are then decorated by women themselves. Whereas the sexual attributes are not represented, Nigel Barley notes that it can be distinguish by different hairstyles. See Dapper (op. cit., p.225) for a girl wearing a doll photographed by Alfred Weidholz in 1941.
