Photograph Caldic Collection Together with Jan Toorop and Mondriaan, Jan Sluijters (1881-1957) is considered to be one of the founders of modern paintings in the Netherlands. Sluijters owes his reputation as a modernist to the work that he painted until shortly after the first World War. From his days at the academy until around 1918 he developed very rapidly, and he did not avoid experimenting. After he had eagerly tried out different styles, such as Fauvism, Luminism, Cubism and Expressionism, he became nationally known in the twenties and thirties as a painter of portraits, nudes, still lifes and domestic scenes in a moderately expressionist style. While much has been written about Sluijters, a clear and easily-consulted overview of his painted oeuvre has been lacking. To fill this need, the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) recently took the initiative in assembling the first digital catalogue raisonné of Sluijters' paintings. The RKD expects to complete the database, which it will publish as a CD-ROM (and, possibly, in book form) within five years. The project is made possible in part by financial support by Christie's Amsterdam. Cooperation of all owners of paintings by Sluijters, public and private, is vital for a successful course of the project. For that reason the RKD kindly requests all owners of paintings -works in oil only- to get into contact with the RKD. A form with more detailed information will be sent to you on request. Naturally, all information will be treated in a confidential manner. Drs. Jacqueline D. de Raad Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) Department of modern & contemporary art P.O.
