Lot Essay

The Italian Soldier was painted during a transition period for Kennington: it demonstrates the influence of his father's looser painterly style but marks the period before he embarked on paintings of flower sellers and costermongers in London, which were depicted in a detailed Pre-Raphaelite manner.

We are very grateful to Dr Jonathan Black for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
