EUCLID. Elementa, in Latin. Translated and with commentary by Federigo Commandino. Pesaro: C. Franceschini, 1572.
2o (314 x 204 mm). Architectural woodcut title border signed by J. Chrieger, woodcut diagrams in text, initials. (Title lightly rubbed and soiled, some very pale dampstaining.) Later stiff vellum (rebacked). Provenance: "B.M.D" (early inkstamp on title); Andrea Bourbon de Monte (inscriptions on first blank and title).
Later Latin edition, but the first Commandino translation, being the first authoritative and accurate rendering from the Greek. A "magisterial translation... [which] dominated the field until the nineteenth century" (Rose, The Italian Renaissance of Mathematics, p.52). Adams E-984; Riccardi I:362; Thomas Stanford 18.
