Lot Essay

Fromentin travelled to Algeria several times and chronicled his experiences in two diaries. Many of the subjects depicted in his paintings reflect his personal experiences as related in these books. The subject of Halte de Muletiers, Algérie reappears in Fromentin's 1872 picture La Halte (Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore).
