Lot Essay

The son of a southern Flemish farmer, Carpentier entered the academy in Antwerp at the age of 18. Here he was taught by Nicaise de Keyser (1813-1887), an artist who had made a name for himself in 1836 as one of the leading figures of historical Romanticism, a genre then flourishing in Europe. He developed an art dominated by the use of a full palette and a bold touch.
