Lot Essay

Evelyn de Morgan studied at the Slade school, famed for its emphasis on life-drawing. Her nude drawings combine the sense of animated movement derived from figure study with a serene classicism which reflects the teaching of Edward J. Poynter. De Morgan produced numerous studies for her paintings, often drawing pairs of figures, or the same figure with and without drapery.
