Lot Essay

Recognised by Anna Matteoli (op. cit.), this copper by Fabrizio Boschi relates to the signed and dated picture of the same subject in the Uffizi by Lodovico Cardi, Il Cigoli. Matteoli suggests that the present picture probably dates to circa 1606, after Boschi returned to Florence from Rome, where he had been since 1602. As she observes, the copper support indicates that this smaller version was intended as an independent work, rather than a study, and it seems likely that it was commissioned for private domestic devotion. Particularly characteristic of Boschi is the rendition of the putti.
