Intruder in the Dust explores the South's racial problems through the genre of a murder mystery story. An aging black man who has long refused to adopt the black's traditionally servile attitude is wrongfully accused of murdering a white man. Originally conceived as a short story, the work grew into the size of a novel, and was made into a motion picture which previewed the following year.

Cowley reviewed the novel for The New Republic (18 October 1948), and this advance copy bears a few of his marginal pencil markings (although the publisher's slip has been lost since the Goodwin auction). During his visit to Cowley's home for a Life magazine profile of the author, Faulkner signed inscribed this and seven other books for Cowley (see also lot 56). A VERY FINE COPY. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone; Massey 72; Peterson A26.2.
