Lot Essay

This large and dramatic drawing comes from a group of sheets by Giani, his pupil Michael Koeck and anonymous artists from Giani's circle. These drawings, dated by Anna Ottani Cavina to 1812-13 when the artist stayed in Paris, were gathered in a portfolio in the 19th century and they remained together until they were sold at Christie's, London, 9 July 2002, lots 83-99.
