Lot Essay

A preparatory study for the Allegory of Eloquence painted in the Church of the Trinité in Paris in 1866. The related work appears in the vault of the second bay of the nave. We are grateful to Margarida Güell, who has confirmed the attribution from a photograph and who suggested the connection, dating the drawing to 1864-5.
