Lot Essay

The second section of the 1959 exhibition, labelled London Caprices, was a success with critics and collectors alike. Kelly played with the associations attached to specific architectural styles by placing well known buildings in fantastical landscapes. The idea of placing the known in the unknown had previously been explored by 18th Century artists like Canaletto and Guardi, who had relocated the buildings of Rome.
