Lot Essay

In 1901 Hart Nibbrig would exhibit 6 paintings depicting Vlieland at Buffa & Zonen in Amsterdam. He would spent two successive summers there. His love for the beach and the sea must have brought him to this small quiet island with only 700 inhabitants in the only village of Oost-Vlieland. 'Do you know Vlieland, it's beautiful' Hart Nibbrig wrote enthousiastically to his friend Albert Plasschaert in 1901: 'I will go again next year, if possible'. Hart Nibbrig who had stayed in Laren uninterruptedly since 1894, was looking in Vlieland for new motives and inspiration, like he had done the year before in Oostvoorne. In the canvases from after 1900, digesting the impressions of several summer journeys, the sparkling of light plays a leading role. (D. Coolen e.a., Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig 1866-1915, Zwolle 1996, p. 99)
