Lot Essay

Léger drew these studies of a conch shell on a sheet of stationery paper from the Villa America, the vacation home in Cap d'Antibes of the American expatriate Gerald Murphy and his wife Sara. The American film-maker Dudley Murphy (who was no relation to Gerald) was the first owner of this drawing; he collaborated with Léger in 1924 on the motion-picture accompaniment to the American composer George Antheil's Le ballet mécanique.
