Lot Essay

Ferdinand Toussaint studied in Paris, and was friends with Alfred Stevens. Although his output is primarily associated with still-life painting and depictions of attractive women, the present lot (possibly a design for a theatre poster or opera house) betrays his Belgian roots with a feel for symbolism, and a bow towards the direction of Art Nouveau - so prevalent in Paris at the time.
